From Daybreak to Good Night

Poems by Carl Sandburg and illustrations by Lynn Smith-Ary. Published by Annick Press in 2001.

This book of poems for children has the official stamp from the bookstore at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site–thanks to Copper’s tios! This is one of Copper’s current favorites. He particularly likes the poem about Spring, and looks forward to being able to tell his feet the alphabet.

Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?

Written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss in 1970.

This book belonged to Copper’s daddy. Copper thinks it’s funny because his g-daddy is Mr. Brown.

Polkabats and Octopus Slacks: 14 Stories

Written and illustrated by Calef Brown. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company in 1998.

Copper liked Flamingos on the Roof so much that he asked for another book of poems and paintings by Calef Brown. Flamingos is still his favorite, but this one is fun too.

Jazz ABZ: An A to Z Collection of Jazz Portraits

Written by Wynton Marsalis and illustrated by Paul Rogers. Published by Candlewick Press in 2005.

Each of the musicians highlighted in this book are presented through a different type of poem. The end of the book includes descriptions of the poetic forms and biographical sketches of the musicians. Some pages are challenging to read (Copper’s mommy can’t get through the “I” page), but all are fun and informative. Copper’s daddy loves jazz.

Flamingos on the Roof

Written and illustrated by Calef Brown. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company in 2006.

These wonky little poems are just plain fun to read, and judging by Copper’s reactions, fun to hear as well. The book is the right size (it actually fits on the bookshelf) and full of color.
