Find a Face

Written and illustrated by Francois and Jean Robert with Jane Gittings. Published by Chronicle Books in 2004.

Copper’s GG finds faces everywhere. She even found a face on the fireplace and outlined it in permanent marker. Copper thinks this book will help prepare him for face-hunting with his GG. He is strangely drawn to the face on the back cover; it looks remarkably like a pacifier.

Harold and the Purple Crayon

Written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson. Published by Harper Collins in 1955.

That purple crayon is pretty wonderful. Copper is considering dressing as Harold for Halloween.

Tidying Up Art

Illustrated by Ursus Wehrli. Published by Prestel in 2003.

On the left, the painting, on the right, the cleaned up version. Copper will think about tidying up the paintings he sees at the museum next time he’s there.

A Boy Named Giotto

Written by Paolo Guarnieri and illustrated by Bimba Landmann. Translated by Jonathan Galassi. Published by Farrar Straus Giroux in 1998.

Copper says, yeah, I’m an art kid. This is a sweet story of how Giotto might have met his teacher and developed into a great artist.

Art

Written by Karen Salmansohn and illustrated by Brian Stauffer. Published by Tricycle Press in 2003.

Copper likes this cool little board book. He thinks that Brian Stauffer had a tougher job than Karen Salmansohn, as the only words are “moma, dada, dali, pop, bauhaus, cubism, and van gogh.” His pals at the museum gave him Art.

Art

Written and illustrated by Patrick McDonnell. Published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006.

This is a book about a little boy named Art who likes to make art–squiggles, zig zags, spirals, and doodles. Copper’s Gram got it for him because the odds are good that Copper will like to make art as well.
