Real
1999
In Real a lone speaker delivers separate personal narratives in a steady, hypnotic tone. The camera remains fixed upon the speaker's mouth and a microphone. The stories are hopelessly unconnected: a memory of Auschwitz, an alien abduction, and a teenager's first kiss. The image seems to acquire an increasingly abstract quality as the audio track slips out of synchronization. The effect is a decentered intimacy, a stream of sampled memories broadcast in a virtual listening room.
